Design It Make It Challenge

TechPoint Foundation for Youth and the IU School of Education invite students to enter the 2019 Design it Make it Challenge. The challenge invites K-12 teams to solve a real world problem by designing and building a solution that improves human health.

Teams will compete against makers and tinkerers from across Indiana to become one of the finalists presenting at the Indiana VEX Robotics State Championship at Lucus Oil Stadium on March 9, 2019.

Frequently asked questions (faqs)

1. What do you mean by “digital technologies?”

These include, but are not limited to: robotics, microcontrollers (e.g., micro:bit or Arduino), microcomputers (e.g., RaspberryPi) or IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

2. What areas of health can we focus on?

We are thinking of health broadly. Teams might work toward solving issues in physical health (like ailments, diseases, disabilities), mental health (e.g., anxiety, depression) or making healthy lifestyle choices (e.g., healthy eating, exercise).

3. Can students be from different grade bands? (For example, can 2 students from 4th grade and one from 5th be on the same team?)

Teams will be evaluated within the following grade bands: K-4, 5-8, 9-12. If a team is composed of students from across multiple grade bands, the highest grade will be used as their grade level for the Showcase evaluation.

4. If I create an app, software, or digital technologies solution using a laptop, does the laptop count as a part of my $100 budget?

No, laptops are not included in the budget and the $100 is a ceiling of expense for teams in a attempt to level the playing field. Don’t consider the $100 a budget you should try to meet.

5. What if my team is not from a school? Can we still participate?

Possibly, the program is designed for educators to assist students through a making process with a focus on design thinking. Please email and let's discuss your options.
